    Great job reviewing this great glass you have there. I bought the Steiner Military 1-4X 25 that came out just before this model. It was hot shit 15 years ago and for me, it still is. Scopes for me, just like with my camera lenses, all about the glass quality. Once you get the taste for top glass, you can't settle for less. Less magnification maybe but not less clear. That crystal clear glass that Steiner Military has is worth every penny to me. My favorite thing to see is when kids in their 20's put down their rifle for a minute and take a look at some real world target out the window at a gun store, whatever, and you see that look of regret that none of their 300 dollar scopes look anything like the Steirner 1-4X with that nice red dot and bullet drop in the glass. Lot's of scopes are cluttered with information in there but you don't really need much more that super clear glass and a dot, no gimmicks can make up for a fuzzy image or cloudy glass. I love the Steiner brand, the taste in the way they do everything.

    Just got a sig Juliet 5 and I have it all the way back on the charging handle and the eye box is awful, I have to crank nose to charging handle. Is this just the nature of 5x magnifiers or is there a mount I could get to bring the magnifier back a bit

    I used to have a VX-R Patrol 1.25-4x20. Basically this scope, but closer to 1x at the low end. They really need to re-release those. That .25 at the low end wasn't really that noticeable, and man that thing was lightweight. Shake awake, and a Firedot reticle similar to the one in the video. Man I regret selling that thing.

  • @rondobrondo
    @rondobrondo День назад

    Videos like yours and Brass Facts and Focus Tripp and basically every other optics reviewer has bumped the Viper PST prices up just a lillll bit. So instead, I just bought one of these on eBay with an enhanced Aero Precision lightweight mount (the ones that don't break lol) for $312. Whereas, unfortunately, the lowest price I was able to find the Viper PST at the moment was about $500 +- tax + the cost of a mount. I was going for the Viper, but I figure that since I have never even OWNED an LPVO before, I should probably try something at $300 instead of $600. And if the SLx 1-6x is just 'too budget for my refined taste' then I'll sell it and get something a lil more expensive. I was originally looking at the Trijicon Credo and Credo HX lines, since I love the ACOG TA31, or a used Eotech Vudu, but just like with my ACOG, I started slow and moved up. The off center sharpness doesn't bother me too much at the moment, since the reason I want an LPVO to POTENTIALLY replace an ACOG TA31 or TA11 (god they're both so good, but the TA31 is a work of art) is because I still want to have something with insanely bright, daylight, point illumination, like this fiber illumination in the SLx. Specifically because I shoot both eyes open and I want something with BAC/Occluded shooting-esque properties. And if I'm going to be shooting more than 200-300yds, you KNOW I'm gonna have that thing on a rest or a pack and I'm gonna be able to lock into that thing no matter what. I plan on using my rifle at 0-500yds max, since I live in an urban/suburban area right next to some canyons and other narrow mountainous passes (I live in the Salt Lake Valley, so having something with better range and windage would be appreciated if I go out into the plains, but unnecessary for the rifle I'm planning to put it on, which is a 16" 5.56 ar15 built to be a bit more lightweight than normal -- the rifle currently weighs 5.3oz. Originally I was planning on getting an MPVO of some kind, like 2-12, but decided the extra weight and cost was unnecessary as well. Given that the SLx with the newly upgraded Aero Precision Lightweight mount is about 7.5oz lighter than a Viper PST with a mount strong enough to hold the damn thing, this seems like a good starting point for me on an AR15 that has a lightweight barrel and a shorter mlok handguard and a lightened barrel nut to begin with.

    Im sorry but that 1x is not only useless but I would say even dangerous if you have it on a real weapon, so I cant agree with it being a great first lpvo, on the contrary its the worst entry lpvo, if it doesnt scare you away from this type of optics it will leave you with terrible training scars.. It is absurd they call that 1x

    Very useful video. I am looking for a reliable 1.93" lpvo mount that prioritizes light weight. Scalarworks seems to be the best all-around for weight, QD capability, ease of leveling, return to zero, lack of snags... at the highest cost. But i am adding the Reptilia to my list alongside the Badger Ordnance and the Zero Gravity. Any thoughts? My max budget can encompass up to Scalarworks, but I am trying to find the best value and balancing of the aforementioned traits.

    I would not be nervous about relying on the Nikon for a nanosecond. Nikon made some of the best scopes available for several decades. Would I be more confident with an old Leupold M8 fixed 4x or a Weaver K4? Yes, but I would have a different answer for vintage variable power scopes from either one.

    A long time ago when the NRA was a noble orginication I remember reading an article in American Hunter where they had done a survey. They reported that most hunters with a 3-9 scope set it at about 4x and never touched it again; as thier need was fast target aquisition and identification and hits just need to land on a 9 inch pie plate. That way of thinking has always made a lot of sense to me.

    I have and love the older Nikon hunting scopes. However, for $400+, modern scopes (even the Chinese stuff) have far better coatings and perform noticeably better in low light/hazy conditions. The vast majority of game, is taken during the first few and last few minutes of legal shooting time. For that reason, at $400 on a serious hunting rig, I'd have to go with something modern.
